Life and other things

Advise Please

I have never believed in asking agony aunts for solutions. To be honest I have been very lucky ,and so far have not encountered a challenging problem. For which I should seek such advise.

But today I was approached by a friends wife. She is a young woman married to a man who is about twenty five years older than her. He is a highly educated man, who holds a very responsable position in an important public sector.

He has been treated for drinking to excess in the past, he nearly died with liver failure some years ago. He was treated succesfully and has been working in the same job.

I hear now that he has started drinking to excess again. The poor wife is distraught. He is a master in hiding his drinking. He can put away a bottle of rum in the night and the next day he can happily travel to work. She cant tell his parents, they are very elderly and the shock will kill them, they know that they nearly lost him last time.

Though I have promised secrecy and can just offer emotional support to the wife, am very uncomfortable about the whole situation. His job is an important one, it involves other people. I sit on various committees, and have always asked for transparency. How can I turn a blind eye to all this?

On the other hand I dont want to jeopardise the man`s lively hood, his wifes trust in me, and the fact that he has been telling his wife that he needs time and he will sort himself out. Can he?

So I know that you all come from different walks and experiences in life and have amazing collective wisdom, thus am asking for your advise.

I never believed that one agony aunt/uncle could have the wisdom to solve any problems, but I know that so many of you with such huge exprience of life , might just do it.

Thank you.
