Freedom of Speech

This morning there is a storm brewing about an offensive tweet to Tom Daley, the young diver who failed to win a medal yesterday. I have not seen the offending tweet, but it seems Tom, in his wisdom re-tweeted it ,and then his supporters came on line and the language got worse and now I read that the Dorset police have arrested an 18 year old man in this connection.

Twitter have also banned an American journalist for complaining about the poor broadcast of the olympic on the American t.v. it seems he named the CEO of that network and tweeted his email address.

I am quite alarmed by the frequent involvement of the police in the social networks. There was the case of the man who was arrested when he tweeted something about an airport, because he was fed up with the delays. He was arrested and his case went to trial and I think he was sentenced. Bu the high court have quashed his conviction.

This means the police are paying more and more attention to the social networking sites. This means officers are sat in the office ,reading the conversations, and this of course takes them off the streets. Where in my opinion the real crime is happening. Is this justified?

And what is freedom of speech, this of course means the right to offend. Truth or telling something as it is often hurtful, but is it a crime?

On this blogsite people are quite blunt and at times abusive to each other, mostly because they disagree with what ever it is that they are discussing. I have often felt angry and hurt, often associated myself with all the angry words about immigrants. Sulked and also complained bitterly, but then found that it is not personal. Some bloggers have left this site, because the thought they were too “sensitive/thin skinned ” for this site.

While it is necessary to observe some basic manners while talking to strangers, I find some do not. But luckily there are very few people who simply come on the site to offend,When the do,I find the best way to deal with them is to ignore them.Their main purpose is to antagonise, when you are not, they soon get bored and go elsewhere to play.

We do not have a constitution, but I believe that in the USA the first amendment is all about free speech and the right to offend!
