It is a remarkable film on many counts, not just superb acting and direction ,but the fact that the lady in question,Philomena Lee is still alive, she is an Irish lady in her eighties ,she is a remarkable lady ,with a quirky sense of humour.
And so is Martin Sixsmith, who has written the book, this film is based on ,and is played by Steeve Coogan.
I have only seen Steeve Coogan as Alan Partridge the comedy sketch ,of which am none too fond , he is superb in this film.
And of Course Dame Judy Dench brings every character she plays, to life.
The film is based on the life story of Mrs Lee,In the 1950’s Ireland.when
When she was staying with her aunt and went to a fair ,she met a young man and despite the dire warnings from her aunt, she continued seeing him and got pregnant.
As she says’I had no idea what pregnant was”! She was sent to a nunnery, where she was made to give birth ,to a baby which was laying in the wrong position ,without any pain idlers,as the sisters of mercy proclaimed that it was her “penance”.
And the children were sold to rich Americans who came to Ireland for this purpose.
Mrs Lee lost her child too this way,but she never forgot him and made frantic efforts to search for him.
Then she met Martin Sixsmith (he was advisor to the Blair government, after being a journalist for the BBC for many years) and had resigned after the scandal when the alleged email about “burying the bad news” was leaked. Though he did not write the email but he was the head of communications and carried the can.
The film is a story of that search, their trip to America to search for the lost son,and they do find out.. well I will not spoil it for you.
What struck me was the lies she was told by the convent, about the whereabouts, but the steely determination of this little lady is so inspiring that you don’t even feel as angry on her behalf as you should.
In the end she is far superior a human being.
It has been a while since I have been to cinema ,I really enjoyed it.
This goes to show that you do not have to be devoted to God to be a better human being!
